Integrated Pathways for Improving Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (InPATH)

The Integrated Pathways for Improving Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (InPATH) project was a four-year, CAD 25.8M initiative (2016-2020) undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada (GAC), One Drop Foundation and JCM Solar Capital Ltd. The initiative aimed to reduce maternal and child mortality in three districts of Malawi by strengthening local health systems for improved delivery and utilization of gender-sensitive maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) services. Activities included: 1) training facility and community-based health workers on the full MNCH continuum of care; 2) establishing and/or rehabilitating water supply systems, hand-washing stations, sanitation and medical waste management systems at rural health facilities; 3) improving abilities of public sector service providers to support delivery of post abortion care and family planning to women and men attending selected public sector health facilities; and 4) building the capacity of local health governance structures and promoting mechanisms for increased citizen engagement. Results were achieved by scaling-up evidence-based MNCH interventions and global best practices; and strengthening partnerships (government, private sector, NGOs and professional society), with a focus on women and girls in rural and under-served areas. The initiative contributed to saving the lives of women and children, with a total of 601,871 direct and 1 million indirect beneficiaries.
