Launch of a Social Inclusion and Gender Policy in Lusaka

July 18, 2018
Following technical assistance from Cowater provided to Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company and Lusaka City Council on social inclusion and gender mainstreaming, a Social Inclusion and Gender Mainstreaming Policies were launched by both institutions in May and June 2018 respectively.

The approval and launch of the policy constitute a major milestone for both organizations in Lusaka, Zambia, as it crystalizes the city’s commitment to social inclusion and gender equality. Cowater was instrumental to the launch of the policy as it provided technical assistance to the development of the policy and implementation strategy; built the awareness of senior officials on the importance of social inclusion for effective service delivery; and trained operational staff on how to implement the policy.

The aims of the policy are to create a workplace conducive to social inclusion and gender mainstreaming and ensure that services provided by the city council and the water and sewerage company are responsive to the needs and priorities of its client base regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, religion and other factors. This policy will ensure that decisions made, and budget allocations are relevant to the needs of residents in Lusaka as well as allowing them to benefit from municipal services and public investments.
