DFATD announces $12M funding to Cowater project in Sahel Region of Burkina Faso

September 7, 2015

Following an announcement earlier this year by the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, Cowater is preparing for project start up of a new, large scale initiative in Burkina Faso.  The project will bring about important development results for Burkina Faso and represents a private sector partnership for DFATD and the Government of Canada in the context of increased corporate social responsibility for Canadian mining companies operating overseas. The project will also receive significant financial support from IAMGOLD.

Cowater, in partnership with IAMGOLD and development partners Development International Desjardins and iDE Burkina Faso, will manage the “Water and Sustainable Economic Growth in the Sahel” – a project designed to accelerate sustainable economic growth in Burkina Faso. The project will improve availability of drinking water and sanitation through the installation of a water treatment plant and sanitation and hygiene promotion activities; improve local livelihoods by supporting market gardening activities by local women’s groups; increase access to markets, and microfinance; and will reinforce local governance to better support economic development and water and sanitation service delivery by local government.
